Humanity Unleashed Inc. is reaching out to academics to participate in an open-source research agenda to leverage AI for collective benefit. Our current academic year project (below) aims to develop a practical tool to help our governance entities and the public grapple with the escalating challenges posed by AI advancements in the private sector.

We are inviting academics to contribute to this vision by researching specific subprojects that support the broader goal. Humanity Unleashed will provide coordination and resources for individual contributors and academic teams that participate.

We are reaching out to AI clubs to recruit talented undergraduates for the project teams and to graduate students, professors, and other researchers to act as mentors on projects relevant to their expertise. So far the response has been very strong, and we are confident of being able to construct numerous effective teams.

Further details can be found in our Pitch Deck. Feel free to reach out by email at [email protected] or schedule an appointment to chat with David Bell, one of our project leads, to discuss any general inquiries. Please see possible roles and ways to get involved below and and join our slack and take our project matching survey if you’d like to get involved!

Our Current Research Agenda Includes:

  1. Value Elicitation with LLMs: Developing methodologies to elicit and quantify individual values that can be aggregated for LLM goal setting, and proposing policy from this distribution that would gain broad bi-partisan support.
  2. Policy-Focused LLM Fine-Tuning: Fine-tuning an open-source LLM using public policy datasets and relevant time series data to better predict and analyze policy outcomes.
  3. Interactive Policy Modeling Interface: Designing a UI that enables policymakers and the public to:
    1. Examine historical data and predict policy impacts.
    2. Utilize the model to suggest policies and elaborate on their implications.
    3. Use individual and group values to customize and contextualize outputs.

Fall Project Teams (work beginning in November)

Product Architecture

This team will research existing policymaking and policy information platforms and determine how best to structure the interface and what functionality would represent a significant value add to policymakers and the general public. This work will inform design and implementation decisions made by other teams and will require cross-functional work other teams. It will also involve outreach to the relevant parties and work with designers and product experts that Humanity Unleashed will help source.
